Are you new to the keto diet and wondering if coffee is allowed? You’ll be happy to know that coffee itself is considered keto-friendly however, once you add sweeteners and milk it would no longer be considered keto-friendly and the number of carbs would have significantly increased.
There are ways to make your coffee keto and to be honest, it’s not as hard as you might think. And they taste great! Seeing as though the keto diet is a high fat, low carb diet, you are able to add various ingredients to your coffee to make it keto, commonly known as a bulletproof coffee.
What is the difference between a keto coffee and a regular coffee?
Keto coffee is considered a coffee that is high in fat and obviously low in carbs. There are various ways you can add fat to your coffee including coconut oil, MCT oil, grass-fed butter, full-fat coconut cream, cacao butter and full-fat cream.
As a comparison, regular coffee is considered a coffee with additives such as sweetness and milk, both of which are not keto-friendly ingredients. Both contain larger amounts of carbs which we are obviously trying to avoid on the keto diet.
What exactly does a keto coffee look like?
The quintessential keto coffee generally contains one cup of freshly brewed coffee, 1 tablespoon of grass-fed butter or ghee and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil or MCT oil. Once these ingredients are combined then placed in a blender and blend until smooth and creamy. When blended the coffee appears to be similar to a latte but is perfect for your keto diet.
As well, you can add other keto-friendly ingredients such as cacao powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla or even unsweetened almond or coconut milk. If you love your coffee with some sweetness then please only use keto-friendly sweeteners such as Stevia or Monk fruit sweetener.
